What's Up, Americans?

Conversations with Americans about America

We talk to Americans everywhere and publish our conversations.
No Filters, No Spin, Just Voice of America.

We’re Tired of the Spin

Like many people, we’ve grown skeptical of the constant spin coming from parts of the media, some institutions, and certainly from politicians.

We’re not convinced that Americans are as deeply divided as the headlines make it seem. We don’t accept the idea—often pushed by right-leaning outlets—that Democrats are mostly unreasonable, nor do we buy the left-leaning narrative that Republicans are largely intolerant or authoritarian. And we suspect most Americans don’t see each other that way either.

But we could be wrong. That’s why we’re starting this project—to listen, learn, and better understand what Americans really think.

We Want to Hear from You

We’re interested in hearing directly from Americans of all backgrounds—what’s on your mind, the challenges you face, the changes you’d like to see, and the things you appreciate about life in our country.

That’s why we’re talking with anyone who’s willing to share, listening to thoughts and stories without the filter of pundits or talking heads.

We Want to Share with You

Once we conduct an interview with someone, we will publish our conversations with Americans from all walks of life—openly and in full—so their perspectives are represented as they are, not edited to fit a particular agenda.

We aim to offer genuine voices and stories, free from partisan spin.

Our Mission

Talk to anyone. Don't judge. Don't Spin.

We are traveling throughout the US and talking to people we meet on our trip about their lives. We hope to hear candid stories about what it is like to live in the US, what people think about current affairs, what they like about living in our country, and what they think should change.

Our mission is to record our conversations with our participants,
and publish them in their entirety, without any spin.

Our Challenge

Our challenge will be to speak with enough people from different backgrounds and generations. If we are lucky, we can talk to a couple of people per week, so that is only about 100 per year. We still have to work while we are doing this.

We are not social scientists, and this is not a scientific project, so the "sample" of people we engage with may not be large enough or diverse enough to give good statistical information about what is going on, but we'll get better at it as we go. As far as diversity is concerned, we may find that people from some groups don't want to engage, and all people who will engage with us will be self-selected. It's not like we can talk to people who do not wish to speak to us.

If the project takes off, we may want to look for other people who would like to contribute by becoming interviewers for our project.

Blogs

We will document our methods, challenges and travels in blogs. Some blogs may be our opinions about what we are learning on the road.
